In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the eggplant output was China (30,362 thousand tonnes), accounting for 59% of global production. Moreover, eggplant output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, India (14,136 thousand tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Egypt with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of eggplant producton in China stood at +4.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+5.2% per year) and Egypt (+1.4% per year).

Global Eggplant Production

Global eggplant production amounted to 51,779 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global eggplant output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +8% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global eggplant production attained its maximum volume of 51,779 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total eggplant output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global eggplant production was primarily driven by population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the eggplant output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world eggplant harvested area amounted to 1,910 thousand ha in 2015, which was 1.9% more than the previous year figure. The eggplant harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +1.8% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total eggplant harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for globally.
