Exports from China
Eggplant exports from China declined markedly to X tonnes in 2021, with a decrease of -X% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tonnes, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, eggplant exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Macao SAR (X tonnes) and Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes) were the main destinations of eggplant exports from China.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Macao SAR (+X value terms, Macao SAR ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for eggplant exports from China, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Macao SAR amounted to +X%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average eggplant export price amounted to $X per tonne, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Macao SAR ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR totaled $X per tonne.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Macao SAR (+X%).

Imports into China
After four years of growth, overseas purchases of eggplants (aubergine) decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, eggplant imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. In 2021, Egypt (X tonnes) was the main supplier of eggplant to China, with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine (X kg), with a X% share of total imports.
