Which Country Exports the Most Stuffed Pasta and Couscous in the World?

Global pasta and couscous exports amounted to 6.1M tonnes in 2016, ascending by 5% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, when it surged by 9% y-o-y. Global pasta and couscous export peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports totaled $8.5B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global pasta and couscous export peaked of $9.3B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Pasta And Couscous Exports By Country

Italy (2M tonnes) represented the key exporting country with an export of around 2M tonnes, which reached 33% of total exports. Turkey (831K tonnes) took a 14% share (based on tonnes) of global pasta and couscous exports, which put it in second place, following China (9%). The U.S. (191K tonnes), Thailand (172K tonnes), Belgium (163K tonnes), South Korea (135K tonnes), Indonesia (131K tonnes), Germany (118K tonnes), Spain (110K tonnes), France (108K tonnes), and Russia (103K tonnes) occupied the mild share of total exports.

Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Turkey (+18.7%), Spain (+13.4%), South Korea (+9.8%), Germany (+6.7%), Thailand (+6.7%), Russia (+4.9%), Indonesia (+4.4%), France (+3.8%), Belgium (+3.5%), China (+2.8%), and the U.S. (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2007-2016. China (-1.9%), Italy (-3.6%), and Turkey (-10.6%) significantly weakened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($2.6B) remains the largest pasta and couscous supplier in the world, making up 30% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China ($838M), with the share of 10% of global exports. It was followed by Turkey, with the share of 5%.

In Italy, pasta and couscous exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+5.8% per year) and Turkey (+16.4% per year).

Pasta And Couscous Export Prices By Country

The average pasta and couscous export price stood at $1,389 per tonne in 2016, reducing by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, pasta and couscous export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when export increased by 29% y-o-y. In that year, average pasta and couscous export price attained its maximum level of $1,693 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average pasta and couscous export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was South Korea ($3,046 per tonne), while Turkey ($508 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of pasta and couscous export prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
