Which Country Exports the Most Eggplant in the World?

Global eggplant exports amounted to 1,275 thousand tonnes in 2015, increasing by +24.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global eggplant exports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +61% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global eggplant exports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global exports amounted to $425 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global exports increased tangibly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +2.2%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Eggplant Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the eggplant exports in absolute volumes was Spain (159 thousand tonnes), accounting for 12% of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands (59 thousand tonnes), with a share of 5% of global exports. Moreover, eggplant exports in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest exporter, the Netherlands, threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Mexico with a share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of eggplant exports in Spain stood at +6.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the Netherlands (+4.7% per year) and Mexico (+0.7% per year).

In value terms, Spain (146 million USD), the Netherlands (87 million USD) and Mexico (54 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2015, together accounting for 68% of total exports.

Turkey (+11.6% per year) had the highest growth rates of eggplant exports among the main exporting countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
