Germany Cheese and Curd Exports

In September 2023, exports of cheese and curd from Germany declined to 112K tons, waning by -9.2% against August 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when exports increased by 18% m-o-m.

In value terms, cheese and curd exports reduced to $528M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports by Country

Italy (21K tons), the Netherlands (13K tons) and France (8.5K tons) were the main destinations of cheese and curd exports from Germany, together comprising 38% of total exports. Belgium, Austria, Spain and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +0.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($96M), the Netherlands ($52M) and France ($46M) constituted the largest markets for cheese and curd exported from Germany worldwide, together accounting for 37% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Belgium, Spain and Romania, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Among the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +1.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (50K tons), unripened or uncured cheese (49K tons) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (9.5K tons) were the main products of cheese and curd exports from Germany, together comprising 97% of total exports.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the biggest increases were in cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (with a CAGR of +0.4%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, the most traded types of cheese and curd in Germany were cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($257M), unripened or uncured cheese ($197M) and processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) ($51M), together comprising 96% of total exports.

In terms of the main product categories, processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered), with a CAGR of +0.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In September 2023, the cheese and curd price stood at $4,724 per ton, therefore (FOB, Germany), remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 9.2% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $5,298 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Austria ($5,539 per ton) and France ($5,385 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($3,945 per ton) and the UK ($4,032 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
