Australia's November 2023 Woolen Yarn Import Declines by 2% to $1.7M

Australia Woolen Yarn Imports

In November 2023, approximately 158 tons of yarn of wool were imported into Australia; approximately reflecting October 2023. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 20% month-to-month.

In value terms, woolen yarn imports shrank to $1.7M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible slump. Imports by Country

In November 2023, New Zealand (107 tons) constituted the largest woolen yarn supplier to Australia, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, woolen yarn imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (9.8 tons), more than tenfold.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from New Zealand amounted to -3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (-6.9% per month) and China (-11.5% per month).

In value terms, New Zealand ($844K) constituted the largest supplier of woolen yarn to Australia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($167K), with a 9.7% share of total imports.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand amounted to -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (-3.4% per month) and China (-11.5% per month).

Imports by Type

In November 2023, yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale (119 tons) constituted the largest type of woolen yarn supplied to Australia, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale (23 tons), fivefold.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale totaled +1.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale (-14.0% per month) and yarn of wool or of fine animal hair, put up for retail sale (-6.0% per month).

In value terms, yarn of carded wool, not put up for retail sale ($958K) constituted the largest type of woolen yarn supplied to Australia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by yarn of combed wool, not put up for retail sale ($403K), with a 23% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In November 2023, the woolen yarn price stood at $10,911 per ton (CIF, Australia), waning by -2.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 15% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $13,806 per ton. From March 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($21,839 per ton), while the price for Portugal ($7,766 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
