For the seventh year in a row, the Indian woolen yarn market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Overall, consumption posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of yarn of wool decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2020. In general, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2019, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, woolen yarn exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2019, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Korea (X tonnes), the UK (X tonnes) and Italy (X tonnes) were the main destinations of woolen yarn exports from India, with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the U.S., Japan, Turkey, Israel, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Israel (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for woolen yarn exported from India were South Korea ($X), the UK ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Italy, the U.S., Israel, Sri Lanka, Turkey, New Zealand and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X the main countries of destination, Israel (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average woolen yarn export price amounted to $X per tonne, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 an increase of X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the U.S. ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into India

In 2020, purchases abroad of yarn of wool increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes. From 2010 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, woolen yarn imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Afghanistan (X tonnes), the UK (X tonnes) and Belgium (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of woolen yarn imports to India, together comprising X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Afghanistan (+X% per year), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest woolen yarn suppliers to India were Italy ($X), China ($X) and the UK ($X), together accounting for X% of total imports.
