For the tenth consecutive year, the global market recorded growth in overseas shipments of paperboard case materials, which increased by 1.9% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, paperboard case material exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +20.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the largest exporters of paperboard case materialsaround the world, together finishing at approx. 29% of total exports. Sweden (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 6% share, followed by France (4.7%). The Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Canada (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Finland (X tons), Japan (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +70.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paperboard case material supplying countries worldwide were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined 36% share of global exports. France, Canada, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Finland, Austria, Japan, Indonesia and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +64.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average paperboard case material export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+2.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the sixth year in a row, the global market recorded growth in supplies from abroad of paperboard case materials, which increased by 3.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.9% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, paperboard case material imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +18.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the major importers of paperboard case materials, together mixing up 37% of total imports. The following importers - Mexico (X tons), the United States (X tons), France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Canada (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 28% of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paperboard case materials imports, with a CAGR of +27.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+8.1%), the United States (+7.9%), the Czech Republic (+6.3%), Mexico (+5.9%), the Netherlands (+4.9%), Canada (+4.1%), Germany (+3.1%), Italy (+2.9%), Spain (+2.9%) and the UK (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while France and Belgium saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -2.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paperboard case material importing markets worldwide were China ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 28% of global imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +25.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average paperboard case material import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
