It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Liberia (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Ghana (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +27.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 76% of total imports. Gambia, Ghana, Togo and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Gambia, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
