Paperboard Case Material Market Size in SADC

The SADC paperboard case material market rose slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 32%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporter of paperboard case materials, constituting 78% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Angola (10%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+12.7%) and Tanzania (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tanzania (+8.2 p.p.) and Angola (+7.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest paperboard case material supplier in SADC, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In South Africa, paperboard case material exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+12.4% per year) and Angola (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of paperboard case materials, when their volume decreased by -1.7% to X tons. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +92.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the key importer of paperboard case materials in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 30% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (11%), Madagascar (11%), Zambia (9%) and Zimbabwe (8.1%). Mauritius (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paperboard case material imports into South Africa stood at +8.4%. At the same time, Angola (+14.7%), Tanzania (+13.9%), Madagascar (+12.1%), Zambia (+9.6%) and Mauritius (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+7.5 p.p.), South Africa (+7 p.p.), Angola (+6.4 p.p.), Madagascar (+4.8 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by -11.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
