In 2021, shipments abroad of typewriters and word-processing machines increased by 8.3% to X units, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 1,660% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, typewriter exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Moldova (X units) was the main destination for typewriter exports from Romania, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, typewriter exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X units), threefold.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Moldova stood at +42.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+77.2% per year) and Bulgaria (-3.4% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for typewriters and word-processing machines exports from Romania, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy stood at +14.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+24.8% per year) and Bulgaria (-16.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2019, the average typewriter export price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 166%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (-13.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The smallest decline of -19.5% was in 2018. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2019, Greece (X units) constituted the largest supplier of typewriter to Romania, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, typewriter imports from Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Slovakia (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (X units), with a 17% share.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Greece stood at -38.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Slovakia (-19.6% per year) and Poland (-18.3% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of typewriters and word-processing machines to Romania, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Greece, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at -41.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-14.2% per year) and Greece (-27.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average typewriter import price stood at $X per unit in 2019, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 75%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2019, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Switzerland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+88.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
