In 2021, the Asian typewriter market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. The total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -22.7% against 2016 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of typewriters and word-processing machines, when their volume increased by 5.8% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, typewriter exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 2.5%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

India was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which reached 37% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X units), China (X units), South Korea (X units), Saudi Arabia (X units) and Singapore (X units), together committing a 57% share of total exports. Malaysia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+51.2%) and Singapore (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-11.6%), Indonesia (-21.2%), Malaysia (-34.9%) and China (-42.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+36 p.p.), Indonesia (+12 p.p.), South Korea (+9.2 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+8.6 p.p.) and Singapore (+6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-1.9 p.p.) and China (-69.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest typewriter supplier in Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +14.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-42.2% per year) and Indonesia (-19.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 69%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Saudi Arabia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

For the third year in a row, Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of typewriters and word-processing machines, which increased by 2.1% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 17%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, typewriter imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 9.5%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hong Kong SAR (X units) represented the major importer of typewriters and word-processing machines, comprising 45% of total imports. The Philippines (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Iran (21%). Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +39.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported typewriters and word-processing machines in Asia, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with a 12% share.

In Hong Kong SAR, typewriter imports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (+32.7% per year) and Iran (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 56%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while Iran ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
