Maize Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Puerto Rican maize market, when its value decreased by -12.8% to $X. Overall, consumption showed a deep slump. Puerto Rico consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Maize Production in Puerto Rico

In value terms, maize production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 174%. Puerto Rico production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of maize in Puerto Rico shrank dramatically to X tons per ha in 2021, with a decrease of -21.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, posted a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 338%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the maize harvested area in Puerto Rico was estimated at X ha, increasing by 11% compared with the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 100% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) was the key exporter of maize, achieving 36% of total exports. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Ukraine (13%) and Brazil (10%). Romania (X tons), France (X tons), India (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Romania (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest maize supplier from Puerto Rico, comprising 37% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 16% share of global exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States stood at +7.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+6.3% per year) and Ukraine (+4.6% per year).

In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the key importers of maize, together generating 41% of total imports. Spain (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Iran (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to maize imports into China stood at +21.6%. At the same time, Vietnam (+23.3%), Italy (+7.9%), Egypt (+6.8%), Colombia (+6.8%), South Korea (+4.0%), Spain (+3.6%), Iran (+3.3%), Malaysia (+2.5%) and the Netherlands (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012-2021. Japan and Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mexico (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China and Vietnam increased by +16 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Mexico ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 33% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Vietnam, Egypt, Spain, the Netherlands, Iran, Colombia, Italy, Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +19.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
