Maize, also known as corn, is one of the most important staple crops in the world, with a global production of over 1 billion metric tons annually. It is a major source of food, animal feed, biofuel, and industrial raw material. Maize is mainly grown in tropical and subtropical regions, and its production is particularly important in Africa, the Americas, and Asia.
The production of maize involves several stages, from land preparation and planting to harvest and processing. The most important factors that affect the production of maize are soil fertility, climate, water availability, pests and diseases, and agricultural practices.
Land preparation
The first step in maize production is land preparation, which involves clearing the land of debris and vegetation, plowing, harrowing, and leveling. The purpose of land preparation is to create a suitable seedbed for planting, improve soil aeration and drainage, and control weeds. The type of soil and the level of fertility, as well as the planting method to be used, determine the depth and intensity of the land preparation.
Planting
Maize can be planted either by direct sowing or by transplanting. The most common method is direct sowing, which involves placing seeds in the soil at a specific depth and spacing, using machines or manual labor. The timing and density of planting depend on the climate, the soil type, the availability of water, and the desired yield. In general, maize requires warm soil temperatures (above 15C) and adequate moisture for optimal germination and growth. The seedlings will emerge after a few days and will begin to grow rapidly, forming a plant with a strong stem, large leaves, and a tassel at the top.
Growth and development
The growth and development of maize are divided into several stages, including vegetative, reproductive, and maturation. The vegetative stage lasts from emergence to tasseling, during which the plant develops a strong root system, grows taller, and produces leaves and stems. The reproductive stage starts with tasseling and lasts until the formation of mature grain, during which the plant produces an ear with silk and kernels. The maturation stage is the final phase, during which the kernels dry and harden, and the plant reaches full maturity.
Harvesting and processing
The timing of maize harvesting depends on the local climate, the variety, and the intended use of the crop. Maize can be harvested when the kernels are still green and moist, known as green maize, or when they have dried and hardened, known as dry maize. Green maize is mainly used for human consumption and animal feed, while dry maize is used for storage, processing, and export. The harvesting process usually involves cutting the plant at the base, removing the ear, and shelling or threshing the kernels from the cob. The kernels can then be stored, processed, or transported to the market or the industry.
Challenges and opportunities
The production of maize faces several challenges and opportunities, depending on the local context and the global trends. Some of the main challenges are climate change, soil degradation, water scarcity, pests and diseases, market volatility, and food security. To overcome these challenges, farmers, researchers, and policymakers need to adopt sustainable and innovative practices, such as conservation agriculture, crop diversification, precision farming, biotechnology, and value chain development. These practices can help to improve the productivity, profitability, and resilience of the maize production system, while promoting the economic and social development of the communities involved.

The global maize market contracted to $404.6B in 2021, declining by -6.1% against the previous year.
The global maize market is expected to reach a production volume of more than 1.2 billion metric tons by the end of 2025.
In 2022, corn prices are projected to drop by approximately 10% y/y due to an expected all-time record high global production, which is to reach 1.2B tons. This forecast is subject to a number of risks, such as volatile fertilizer and energy prices, high freight rates, biofuel policies and weather conditions.
Driven by rising demand from the food industry and favourable weather, global corn production increased significantly in 2020. The rise in prices made the raw corn-based production of bioethanol unprofitable amid the low cost of traditional fuels due to the pandemic, resulting in the closure of some distilleries. In the future, the growing demand for alternative fuels is expected to offset this shift and promote the corn market.
