Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 994%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 883%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kuwait (X kg) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from the Philippines, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Kuwait exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bahrain (X kg), twofold. The United States (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kuwait was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bahrain (-1.7% per year) and the United States (+32.4% per year).
In value terms, Kuwait ($X) remains the key foreign market for cucumber and gherkin exports from the Philippines, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kuwait amounted to +4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+4.9% per year) and Bahrain (-20.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average cucumber and gherkin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Philippines
In 2021, overseas purchases of cucumbers and gherkins increased by 88% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 132%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 130% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cucumber and gherkin to the Philippines, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X kg), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ecuador (X kg), with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +53.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+52.9% per year) and Ecuador (0.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Ecuador ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the largest cucumber and gherkin suppliers to the Philippines, together comprising 97% of total imports.
China, with a CAGR of +63.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average cucumber and gherkin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cucumber and gherkin import price increased by +66.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 74% against the previous year.
