Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from China, with a 55% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mongolia (X tons), with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR totaled -7.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-9.5% per year) and Mongolia (-10.6% per year).
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for cucumber and gherkin exports from China, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 29% share of total exports. It was followed by Macao SAR, with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR stood at +24.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-0.8% per year) and Macao SAR (+9.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cucumber and gherkin export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted resilient growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of cucumbers and gherkins decreased by -5.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 4,952%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,322% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cucumber and gherkin to China, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Brazil (X kg), with a 15% share.
