China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cucumber and gherkin production, comprising approx. 89% of total volume. It was followed by Turkey (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total production.

The average cucumber and gherkin yield declined to X tons per ha in 2021, flattening at 2020. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Afghanistan (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) represented the key exporters of cucumbers and gherkins in 2021, finishing at near 33% and 28% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together making up a 27% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +122.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), China ($X) and Afghanistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 71% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +83.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 6.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+18.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of cucumbers and gherkins were imported in Asia; surging by 10% on the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 97%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 64%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Iraq was the main importer of cucumbers and gherkins in Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2021. Pakistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held near 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Qatar (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Georgia (X tons) - each reached a 5.5% share of total imports.
Imports into Iraq increased at an average annual rate of +46.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+102.2%), Georgia (+3.4%), Hong Kong SAR (+3.3%) and Qatar (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +102.2% from 2012-2021. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Iraq (+52 p.p.) and Pakistan (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Georgia, Hong Kong SAR, Qatar and Singapore saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2%, -2.6% and -9.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Iraq ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cucumbers and gherkins in Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Iraq amounted to +45.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+83.7% per year) and Singapore (+3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 6.8% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
