The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -15.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest bleached sulphate pulp supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uruguay ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil totaled +4.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uruguay (+18.2% per year) and Chile (-0.9% per year).

The export price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports in MERCOSUR

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of bleached sulphate pulp decreased by -5.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of bleached sulphate pulp, namely Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Peru, represented more than two-thirds of total import. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - together made up 7.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Argentina ($X), Brazil ($X) and Colombia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Peru, Ecuador, Chile and Uruguay, which together accounted for a further 22%.
