Bleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of bleached sulphate pulp, when their volume decreased by -1.5% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 9%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the main exporter of bleached sulphate pulp, generating 28% of total exports. The United States (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Canada (9.7%), Indonesia (8.8%), Uruguay (6.9%), Finland (6.5%), Chile (6.1%) and Sweden (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bleached sulphate pulp exports from Brazil stood at +7.0%. At the same time, Uruguay (+18.2%), Finland (+6.6%), Indonesia (+3.3%) and Sweden (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2021. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Chile (-1.3%) and Canada (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+8.7 p.p.), Uruguay (+5 p.p.) and Finland (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of Chile (-2.6 p.p.), the United States (-3.6 p.p.) and Canada (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bleached sulphate pulp supplying countries worldwide were Brazil ($X), the United States ($X) and Canada ($X), together comprising 44% of global exports. These countries were followed by Finland, Indonesia, Uruguay, Sweden and Chile, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +18.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average bleached sulphate pulp export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Global imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the key importer of bleached sulphate pulp, mixing up 38% of total imports. The United States (X tons) took a 9.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (6.5%), the Netherlands (5.9%) and Italy (5.6%). South Korea (X tons), France (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Japan (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Spain (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bleached sulphate pulp imports into China stood at +5.8%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+10.1%), Turkey (+7.0%), Poland (+6.4%), the United States (+2.2%) and Spain (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.2%), Japan (-1.5%), South Korea (-1.6%) and France (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China and the Netherlands increased by +8.2 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
