Bleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

Exports from Uruguay

For the third year in a row, Uruguay recorded growth in shipments abroad of bleached sulphate pulp, which increased by 41% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for bleached sulphate pulp exports from Uruguay, accounting for a 23% share of total exports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 9.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled +7.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+41.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+38.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for bleached sulphate pulp exported from Uruguay were China ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 42% of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +42.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average bleached sulphate pulp export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Italy ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Uruguay

In 2021, approx. X tons of bleached sulphate pulp were imported into Uruguay; jumping by 62% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Free Zones (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bleached sulphate pulp to Uruguay, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp imports from Free Zones exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X tons), with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Free Zones totaled -4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+16.2% per year) and the United States (-7.3% per year).

Brazil, with a CAGR of +20.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average bleached sulphate pulp import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -33.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell sharply in the following year.
