In value terms, canned mushroom exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the largest exporter of canned mushrooms, making up 49% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Palestine (10%), Syrian Arab Republic (6.2%), Iran (5.7%) and Kuwait (4.9%). Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+35.8%), Syrian Arab Republic (+15.9%), Kuwait (+14.1%) and Palestine (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +35.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-8.6%) and Lebanon (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+28 p.p.), Palestine (+6 p.p.), Iran (+5.5 p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (+4.8 p.p.) and Kuwait (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -4.4% and -25.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest canned mushroom supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Syrian Arab Republic ($X) and Kuwait ($X), together accounting for 76% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Syrian Arab Republic, with a CAGR of +35.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, falling by -25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (+17.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of canned mushrooms imported in MENA fell to X tons, shrinking by -5.8% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6.5%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The purchases of the three major importers of canned mushrooms, namely the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Iraq, represented more than third of total import. Tunisia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.9% share, followed by Morocco (7.5%), Kuwait (7.5%) and Lebanon (6.3%). The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Iraq (with a CAGR of +5.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In terms of the main importing countries, Iraq, with a CAGR of +9.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, canned mushroom import price increased by +80.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 22%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
