Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of bleached sulphate pulp exported in Latin America and the Caribbean expanded slightly to X tons, surging by 3.8% against the year before. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +73.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -15.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) represented the major exporter of bleached sulphate pulp, achieving 67% of total exports. Uruguay (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Chile (15%).

Exports from Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uruguay (+18.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uruguay (+10 p.p.) and Brazil (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Chile (-14.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest bleached sulphate pulp supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uruguay ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In Brazil, bleached sulphate pulp exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uruguay (+18.2% per year) and Chile (-0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Bleached sulphate pulp imports contracted rapidly to X tons in 2021, which is down by -16.1% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 10%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X tons), distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Cayman Islands (X tons) were the main importers of bleached sulphate pulp, together comprising 82% of total imports. El Salvador (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by El Salvador (with a CAGR of +58.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 54% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Colombia, Cayman Islands, Peru and El Salvador, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Cayman Islands, with a CAGR of +57.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cayman Islands (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
