Typewriter Market Size in Germany

The German typewriter market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption showed a pronounced curtailment. Typewriter consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, typewriter production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 42%. Typewriter production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2019, overseas shipments of typewriters and word-processing machines were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a precipitous curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2019, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, typewriter exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2019. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 178%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2019, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Philippines (X units) was the main destination for typewriter exports from Germany, accounting for a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, typewriter exports to the Philippines exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X units), sevenfold. Algeria (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Philippines stood at -2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-46.9% per year) and Algeria (-20.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for typewriter exported from Germany were the Philippines ($X), Austria ($X) and Algeria ($X), together accounting for 28% of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, Senegal, France, Poland, Switzerland, Belgium, Tunisia, Turkey, Denmark and Bahrain, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Senegal, with a CAGR of +161.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2019, the average typewriter export price amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -20.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 69%. Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

For the fourth year in a row, Germany recorded decline in supplies from abroad of typewriters and word-processing machines, which decreased by -9.6% to X units in 2019. Over the period under review, imports showed a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 192%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.
