In 2021, the Europe x-ray examination preparations market decreased by -2.8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations decreased by -17.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, x-ray examination preparations exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), Ireland (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the key exporters of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations, together mixing up 93% of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each finished at a 4.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +56.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest x-ray examination preparations supplier in Europe, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ireland ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 13% share.
In Germany, x-ray examination preparations exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ireland (+0.7% per year) and Belgium (+47.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, growing by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
X-Ray Examination Preparations Imports
Imports in Europe
For the fourth consecutive year, Europe recorded growth in supplies from abroad of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations, which increased by 3.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) represented the largest importer of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations, achieving 41% of total imports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Germany (10%). The UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Norway (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Greece (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations imports, with a CAGR of +34.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+11.2%), Greece (+4.7%), Spain (+2.7%) and the Netherlands (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.8%), Italy (-2.1%), the UK (-2.9%), Ireland (-7.2%), Russia (-8.4%) and Poland (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium and France increased by +36 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +18.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 11%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
