Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.6% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Norway (X tons), Ireland (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Greece (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations imports, with a CAGR of +34.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+11.2%), Greece (+4.7%), Spain (+2.7%) and the Netherlands (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In terms of the main importing countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +18.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 11%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
