Hydraulic Lime Market Size in Europe

In 2022, the Europe hydraulic lime market increased by 7.8% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the market value increased by 8.3% against the previous year. In value terms, France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 69% of total exports. Portugal, Italy, Austria and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Lithuania, with a CAGR of +349.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Lithuania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of hydraulic lime increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hydraulic lime imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 53%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 43% of total imports. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the UK (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together held near 35% share of total imports. Austria (X tons), Italy (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

The Netherlands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hydraulic lime imports, with a CAGR of +59.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+32.8%), France (+12.3%), Spain (+9.2%), the UK (+8.9%) and Slovenia (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Austria (-1.3%), Croatia (-3.2%), Germany (-4.1%) and Italy (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+42 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Slovenia, Germany, Croatia, Austria and Italy saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -5.1%, -6.4%, -7.8% and -17.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hydraulic lime in Europe, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands amounted to +65.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the UK (+11.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (+32.0% per year).

The import price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year.
