The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Sweden (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by France (8.4%), Poland (7.7%), Russia (6.9%), the Netherlands (6.7%), Finland (6.3%) and Austria (6.2%). Spain (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paperboard case material exports from Germany stood at +2.8%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+13.8%), Russia (+12.0%), Finland (+8.4%), Italy (+5.9%), Austria (+5.4%), Switzerland (+4.7%), Poland (+4.3%), France (+4.1%), Hungary (+2.4%) and Portugal (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Europe, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+4.2 p.p.), Russia (+3.8 p.p.) and Finland (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany, Spain and Sweden saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -3.1% and -3.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest paperboard case material supplier in Europe, comprising 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at +5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (+1.9% per year) and France (+6.9% per year).

The export price in Europe stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of paperboard case materials decreased by -3.4% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 8.9% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) was the largest importer of paperboard case materials in Europe, creating 76% of total import. The following importers - Portugal (X tons), Austria (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - together made up 8.9% of total imports.
