In 2022, overseas shipments of paperboard case materials decreased by -9.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +14.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 39%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 87%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Serbia (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of paperboard case material exports from Croatia, with a combined 58% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +33.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for paperboard case material exported from Croatia were Serbia ($X), Italy ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 59% of total exports.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Italy ($X per ton) and Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) and Slovenia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to North Macedonia (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia

In 2022, the amount of paperboard case materials imported into Croatia shrank to X tons, dropping by -6% on the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +14.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of paperboard case material imports to Croatia, together accounting for 80% of total imports. Italy, Serbia, Poland and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paperboard case material import price increased by +69.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
