The Ecuadorian wrapping papers market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Wrapping papers consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, wrapping papers exports from Ecuador soared to X tons, rising by 15% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Colombia (X tons) was the main destination for wrapping papers exports from Ecuador, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, wrapping papers exports to Colombia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Panama (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Colombia totaled +4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (+31.3% per year) and Peru (-14.5% per year).

In value terms, Colombia ($X), Panama ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wrapping papers exported from Ecuador worldwide, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Panama, with a CAGR of +34.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average wrapping papers export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Peru (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ecuador

In 2021, overseas purchases of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard increased by 88% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Colombia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) were the main suppliers of wrapping papers imports to Ecuador, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +76.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest wrapping papers suppliers to Ecuador were Colombia ($X), Spain ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 84% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +53.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average wrapping papers import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
