In 2021, the Asia-Pacific roasted coffee market decreased by -0.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +36.6% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Roasted Coffee Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, roasted coffee production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +45.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Roasted Coffee Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, the amount of roasted coffee exported in Asia-Pacific dropped to X tons, falling by -10.8% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roasted coffee exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted temperate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 219%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Malaysia (X tons), distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Japan (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), China (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the largest exporters of roasted coffee, together mixing up 86% of total exports. India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +29.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Australia, China, Indonesia and India, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +32.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Roasted Coffee Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, purchases abroad of roasted coffee increased by 5.3% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted coffee imports reached $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +20.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of roasted coffee, namely South Korea, China and Australia, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together mixing up a 32% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest roasted coffee importing markets in Asia-Pacific were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
