Video Game Console Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022

The average video game console export price stood at $2,504 per unit in 2022, declining by -40.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $4,229 per unit in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($35,627 per unit), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($220 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+13.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Video Game Console Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023

The average video game console import price stood at $533 per unit in July 2023, surging by 7.3% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 33% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $715 per unit. From January 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($660 per unit), while the price for China stood at $506 per unit.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.5%).

Video Game Console Exports in Japan

In 2022, the amount of video game consoles exported from Japan soared to 916K units, rising by 35% on 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, video game console exports fell rapidly to $2.3B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 28%. The exports peaked at $2.9B in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +18.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, video game console imports skyrocketed to $2B in 2022.
