Taro (Cocoyam) Price in China (FOB) - 2023
In December 2023, the average taro (cocoyam) export price amounted to $1,288 per ton, with a decrease of -16.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 34% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $2,171 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($2,129 per ton), while the average price for exports to Macao SAR ($273 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average taro (cocoyam) import price amounted to $700 per ton, which is down by -30% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 67% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,260 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Myanmar.
From September 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Myanmar amounted to -0.0% per month.
Taro (Cocoyam) Exports in China
For the third year in a row, China recorded decline in overseas shipments of taro, which decreased by -5.1% to 60K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction.
In value terms, taro (cocoyam) exports rose sharply to $81M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Taro (Cocoyam) Imports in China
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of taro, when their volume decreased by -58.5% to 435 tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 143%.
