Spice Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2022
The average spice import price stood at $1,845 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,215 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($3,404 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($345 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Spice Price in Malaysia (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average spice export price amounted to $4,228 per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spice export price increased by +37.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $5,904 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($6,796 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($2,676 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Spice Imports in Malaysia
In 2022, purchases abroad of spices decreased by -5.5% to 160K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 6% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 170K tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, spice imports declined notably to $296M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 43% against the previous year.

Spice exports from Malaysia declined to 18K tons in 2022, with a decrease of -9.8% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The smallest decline of -2.9% was in 2020.
In value terms, spice exports rose notably to $76M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
