China and India Became Fastest-Growing Spice Importers Over Last Decade
IndexBox has just published a new report: 'World - Spices - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends and Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
Global Spice Imports
In 2020, supplies from abroad of spices decreased by -28% to 2.4M tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In value terms, supplies dropped notably to $7B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
The U.S. (479K tonnes), distantly followed by China (312K tonnes), India (185K tonnes), Pakistan (158K tonnes), Germany (146K tonnes), the Netherlands (139K tonnes) and the U.K. (113K tonnes) represented the largest importers of spices, together achieving 65% of total imports. Spain (104K tonnes), Japan (100K tonnes), Sri Lanka (81K tonnes), France (51K tonnes), Egypt (41K tonnes), and South Africa (40K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
In value terms, the largest spice importing markets worldwide were the U.S. ($1.4B), China ($743M) and India ($623M), together comprising 39% of global imports.
China (+37% per year), India (+12% per year), and the U.S. (+5% per year) saw the highest rates of growth concerning the value of imports over the past decade, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2020, the average spice import price amounted to $2,984 per tonne, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was France ($4,484 per tonne), while Pakistan ($1,218 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Top Leading Spice Suppliers Worldwide
India represented the leading exporting country with an export of about 1.3M tonnes, which finished at 45% of global supplies. It was distantly followed by China (858K tonnes), achieving a 29% share of total exports. The Netherlands (113K tonnes), Spain (106K tonnes), Guatemala (67K tonnes), Myanmar (63K tonnes) and Germany (48K tonnes) occupied a tiny share of total volume.
In value terms, India ($2.5B), China ($1.9B) and Guatemala ($1.1B) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined 68% share of global supplies. The Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 14%.
