Last year, China recorded a sharp rise in caramel imports. The supplies into China grew from $80M in 2019 to $408M in 2020, or from 167K tonnes to 1.1M tonnes in physical terms. Thailand, Viet Nam and Myanmar remain the largest caramel suppliers, comprising 82% of Chinese imports.These three countries provided most of the increment in Chinese imports in 2020. The average caramel import price dropped by -21% y-o-y to $378 per tonne in 2020.
In the past decade, American protein concentrate exports doubled, reaching $873M in 2020. Last year, protein concentrate exports from the U.S. decreased slightly in physical terms. In value terms, the supplies abroad remained relatively unchanged against the previous year. Canada, Mexico and the Netherlands constitute the major importers of American proteins, with a combined 36%-share of the total exports from the U.S. Among other countries, Switzerland recorded the highest spike in imports in 2020. The average U.S. export price for protein concentrates soared by +15% y-o-y to $6,578 per tonne in 2020.
Global imports of fructose and fructose syrup rose by +8.6% y-o-y to 4M tonnes in 2020. China has extraordinarily increased fructose purchases sixfold, driving out the leading importer, Mexico, from the first to the second place in the global import ranking. Thailand, Viet Nam and Myanmar remain the key suppliers of fructose to China. Outside these countries, Indonesia saw the highest growth rate in terms of supplies to China.
Honey imports in the EU grew up by 11% y-o-y to 308K tonnes or $897M in 2020. Among the European countries, Germany continues to hold its leading position in terms of import volume. Over the last year, Poland, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importers of honey in the EU, while supplies to Italy and Belgium decreased. The average import honey price in the EU remained almost unchanged from the previous year.
