Soybean oil is a widely used vegetable oil that is extracted from soybean seeds. The extraction process involves several steps that convert the soybeans into oil. Let's take a closer look at the soybean oil making process:
1. Cleaning and Preparation:
The first step is to thoroughly clean and remove any impurities from the soybeans. This is done by passing the soybeans through different cleaning machines that remove stones, dust, and other foreign materials. Once cleaned, the soybeans are ready for the next step.
2. Cracking and Dehulling:
In this step, the soybeans are cracked into small pieces using mechanical or extrusion methods. This helps in reducing the oil content and makes it easier to extract oil from the seeds. Then, the cracked soybeans are dehulled to remove the outer shell or hull. Dehulling helps in improving the efficiency of the oil extraction process.
3. Conditioning and Flaking:
The dehulled soybeans are then conditioned by adjusting their moisture content and temperature. Conditioning improves the performance of the subsequent processes and facilitates oil extraction. After conditioning, the soybeans are passed through flaking rollers that flatten them into flakes. Flaking ruptures the cell walls, making it easier for oil to be extracted.
4. Cooking and Pressing:
The soybean flakes are then cooked using steam to raise their temperature and denature the proteins, which enhances oil extraction. The cooked flakes are then mechanically pressed to squeeze out the oil. This can be done using various types of mechanical presses, such as screw presses or hydraulic presses. The resulting mixture of oil and solid residue is called crude oil cake or soybean meal.
5. Oil Refining:
The crude oil cake obtained from the pressing process contains impurities, such as gums, phospholipids, and free fatty acids, which need to be removed. The crude oil is subjected to a refining process that involves degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization. These processes remove the impurities, improve the color and flavor of the oil, and increase its shelf life.
6. Packaging and Storage:
Once the soybean oil is refined, it is packaged in containers suitable for storage and transportation. The oil is commonly stored in steel drums or plastic containers to protect it from sunlight, air, and moisture. Proper packaging and storage help to maintain the quality and freshness of the oil.
The soybean oil making process outlined above is a generalized approach. Different oil extraction methods and equipment may be used depending on the scale of production and desired quality of the oil. However, these basic steps provide an overview of how soybean oil is made.

In 2022, soybean oil prices are forecast to rise by nearly 4% to $1,425 per ton, driven by boosting demand for biofuels. In 2021, the average annual soybean oil price skyrocketed, rising 65% y-o-y to $1,385 per ton. India remains the world’s largest soybean oil importer, while Argentina holds the position of the leading global supplier.
The soybean oil market indicates steady growth, despite the COVID-19 pandemic cut demand for biofuel.
