Taro (Cocoyam) Production in Burundi - 2022

In 2022, the amount of taro produced in Burundi dropped remarkably to 131K tons, waning by -18.1% on the previous year. Over the period under review, production, however, saw slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 57%. Over the period under review, (cocoyam) production reached the peak volume at 218K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure. Taro (cocoyam) output in Burundi indicated a mild increase, which was largely conditioned by mild growth of the harvested area and a prominent increase in yield figures.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) production contracted remarkably to $152M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Taro (cocoyam) production peaked at $252M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of taro production in Burundi contracted to 6.1K ha, approximately equating 2021. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to taro (cocoyam) production attained the maximum at 7.4K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Taro (Cocoyam) Yield in Burundi - 2022

In 2022, the average taro (cocoyam) yield in Burundi dropped notably to 21 tons per ha, which is down by -16.9% on 2021. Overall, the yield, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 52% against the previous year. The taro (cocoyam) yield peaked at 34 tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
