Which Country Exports the Most Roots And Tubers in the World?

Global roots and tubers exports amounted to 404 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +11.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global roots and tubers exports indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +16% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global roots and tubers exports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global exports amounted to $387 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global exports increased tangibly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +5.3%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Roots And Tubers Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the roots and tubers exports in absolute volumes was China (111 thousand tonnes), accounting for 27% of global exports. It was followed by Mexico (43 thousand tonnes), with a share of 11% of global exports. Moreover, roots and tubers exports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest exporter, Mexico, threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Romania with a share of 10%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of roots and tubers exports in China stood at -2.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Mexico (+3.3% per year) and Romania (+20.4% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of exports of roots and tubers in absolute volumes was China (162 million USD), making up 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Costa Rica (33 million USD), with a share of 9% of global exports. Moreover, roots and tubers exports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Costa Rica (33 million USD), fivefold. It was followed by the United States with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of roots and tubers exports in China was at +8.7%. The remaining exporting countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Costa Rica (+2.5% per year) and the United States (+16.3% per year).
