Garlic Production in South Korea - 2022
In 2022, production of garlic decreased by -11.6% to 273K tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 17%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 388K tons. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure. Garlic output in South Korea indicated a noticeable slump, which was largely conditioned by a pronounced reduction of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, garlic production rose markedly to $1.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a slight increase from 2017 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +34.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46%. Garlic production peaked at $1.4B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Garlic Harvested Area in South Korea - 2022
In 2022, approx. 22K ha of garlic were harvested in South Korea; increasing by 1.7% on the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of 28K ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the garlic harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Garlic Yield in South Korea - 2022
The average yield of garlic in South Korea dropped to 12 tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -13% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 20% against the previous year. The garlic yield peaked at 14 tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
