After five years of growth, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -1.6% to 458K tons in 2022. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 7.7%. Production of peaked at 466K tons in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre output in Sri Lanka indicated pronounced growth, which was largely conditioned by a temperate increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reduced modestly to $233M in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 22%. Production of peaked at $250M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. 92K ha of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres were harvested in Sri Lanka; dropping by -1.6% on 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre production reached the maximum at 93K ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Coconut, Abaca, Ramie and Other Vegetable Textile Fibre Yield in Sri Lanka - 2022
The average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Sri Lanka dropped modestly to 5 tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 0.9%. Over the period under review, the average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres hit record highs at 5 tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
