Which Country Consumes the Most Fiber Crops in the World?

Global primary fiber crops consumption amounted to 32,605 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +6.0% against the previous year level. Overall, the global primary fiber crops consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +11% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global primary fiber crops consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Fiber Crops Consumption

With nearly 611 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading primary fiber crops consuming country, making up 215% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (81 thousand tonnes) and Brazil (67 thousand tonnes), with a share of 29% and 23%, respectively. Moreover, primary fiber crops consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the United States eightfold. They were followed by Canada with a 14% of global consumption share and Viet Nam with a 12% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of primary fiber crops consumption in China stood at +10.8%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+18.1% per year) and Brazil (-4.9% per year).

The highest levels of primary fiber crops per capita consumption was registered in Canada (1.07 kg/year), followed by China (0.43 kg/year), Viet Nam (0.35 kg/year), Brazil (0.32 kg/year) and the United States (0.25 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of primary fiber crops was estimated at 0.02 kg/year in 2015.

In the United States, per capita primary fiber crops consumption has grown noticably (+17.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, the United States per capita consumption reached 1.07 kg/year as compared with 0.07 kg/year in 2007.
