Which Country Imports the Most Fiber Crops in the World?

Global primary fiber crops imports amounted to 924 thousand tonnes in 2015, picking up by +2.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global primary fiber crops imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +24% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global primary fiber crops imports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global primary fiber crops imports amounted to $479 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global primary fiber crops imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +11.4%. This trend pattern, however, was roller-coasting throughout the analyzed period.

Primary Fiber Crops Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the primary fiber crops imports in absolute volumes was China (611 thousand tonnes), accounting for 66% of global imports. It was followed by the United States (82 thousand tonnes), with a share of 9% of global imports. Moreover, primary fiber crops imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, the United States (82 thousand tonnes), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the United Kingdom with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of primary fiber crops imports in China stood at +10.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+17.8% per year) and the United Kingdom (+7.1% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of primary fiber crops in absolute volumes was China (239 million USD), making up 50% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the United States (43 million USD), with a share of 9% of global imports. Moreover, primary fiber crops imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, the United States (43 million USD), fivefold. It was followed by the United Kingdom with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of primary fiber crops imports in China was at +17.5%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+16.3% per year) and the United Kingdom (+7.5% per year).
