The average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $185 per ton in 2022, rising by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -9.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 88%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $283 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($1,386 per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($145 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $384 per ton, with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $398 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($387 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya amounted to $346 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+20.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, overseas purchases of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -9.6% to 28K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 31K tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds fell to $5.2M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year.

As a result, the exports attained the peak of 2.3K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, exports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds contracted to $782K in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $878K, and then dropped in the following year.
