In August 2023, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $1,015 per ton, shrinking by -22.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a mild expansion from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -29.8% against June 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 35% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $1,446 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($3,084 per ton), while the price for Poland ($684 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $843 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds increased by +14.5% against August 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 26% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,024 per ton. From July 2023 to September 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Austria ($2,436 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($798 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+15.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, Slovakia recorded decline in purchases abroad of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds, which decreased by -9.3% to 16K tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep setback.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds contracted remarkably to $15M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 2.7%.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 20K tons, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, exports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds declined to $8.1M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 5.1% against the previous year.
