In October 2023, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $783 per ton, picking up by 2.3% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a temperate expansion from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by +0.0% against June 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,147 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to October 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,076 per ton), while the price for France ($518 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $561 per ton in October 2023, rising by 9.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 69% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,361 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($980 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($516 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
