In 2022, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $2,257 per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 135%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Lebanon ($2,273 per ton) and Greece ($2,273 per ton), while the price for China ($2,273 per ton) and Turkey ($2,273 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+32.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $1,030 per ton in December 2022, increasing by 7% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 58% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in December 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Iraq ($1,200 per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($589 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -33.2% to 3.4K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 6.6K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds fell notably to $7.8M in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 107%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $12M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
