The average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds stood at $1,018 per ton in March 2022, jumping by 71% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight expansion from March 2021 to March 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on March 2022 figures, import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds increased by +93.3% against January 2022 indices. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,115 per ton in December 2021; however, from January 2022 to March 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($1,215 per ton), while the price for India ($425 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2021 to March 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $1,682 per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 145% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,702 per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($2,323 per ton), while the average price for exports to Timor-Leste ($226 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds decreased by -38.4% to 443K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 723K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds reduced remarkably to $390M in 2022. In general, imports faced a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $727M, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
