In January 2024, the average import price for sunflower seed amounted to $1,749 per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 36% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,169 per ton in September 2023; however, from October 2023 to January 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was China ($1,777 per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($498 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for sunflower seed stood at $1,029 per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $6,307 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($7,704 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($789 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Myanmar (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +94.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
