Price for Lamb and Sheep Meat in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023

The average lamb and sheep meat export price stood at $5,634 per ton in August 2023, waning by -10.4% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 6.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $7,186 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($11,271 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($3,475 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average lamb and sheep meat import price stood at $3,432 per ton in August 2023, reducing by -25.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $4,614 per ton in July 2023, and then reduced remarkably in the following month.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Australia.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the UK amounted to +1.1% per month.

Exports of Lamb and Sheep Meat in New Zealand

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of lamb and sheep meat decreased by -5.6% to 374K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 1.4%.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat exports reduced to $2.7B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $2.9B, and then fell in the following year.
