In 2022, the average jute and jute-like fibers import price amounted to $893 per ton, declining by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,996 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($936 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh amounted to $892 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (-4.2%).

Price for Jute and Jute-Like Fibers in Sri Lanka (FOB) - 2022

The average jute and jute-like fibers export price stood at $1,105 per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 198% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,491 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,211 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($859 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+18.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Jute and Jute-Like Fibers in Sri Lanka

In 2022, approx. 219 tons of jute and jute-like fibers were imported into Sri Lanka; with an increase of 21% on the year before. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 257 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers imports expanded markedly to $196K in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $221K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of jute and jute-like fibers decreased by -19.6% to 120 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 311%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 240 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, jute and jute-like fibers exports declined notably to $132K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 246% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $253K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
