Which Country Consumes the Most Jute in the World?

Global jute consumption amounted to 3,625 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +6.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global jute consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global jute consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Jute Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were India (1,997 thousand tonnes), Bangladesh (1,294 thousand tonnes), China (25 thousand tonnes), together comprising 98% of total consumption. They were followed by Uzbekistan with a 1% of global consumption share and Nepal with a 0% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of jute consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Bangladesh (+5.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of jute per capita consumption was registered in Bangladesh (8.04 kg/year), followed by India (1.52 kg/year), Uzbekistan (0.68 kg/year), Nepal (0.54 kg/year) and China (0.02 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of jute was estimated at 0.54 kg/year in 2015.

In Bangladesh, per capita jute consumption has grown noticably (+4.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Bangladesh per capita consumption reached 8.04 kg/year as compared with 5.72 kg/year in 2007.
